Internet and Systems Investigations

GCHQ is offering you an exciting opportunity to join our Internet and Systems Investigation team. Working within the fields of online investigations, social engineering, web-based technology exploitation and digital device analysis, you’ll be providing a critical service to our mission outcomes.

As one of Britain’s intelligence agencies, we unlock the complex world of communications to keep our nation safe. We work closely with our partners in the intelligence community to safeguard Britain’s people, interests and businesses from various threats. Think cyber-attacks, espionage, terrorism, and organised crime. It’s challenging, varied and meaningful work that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Expect a challenging and rewarding experience, working within a high-tempo and impact area. In the Internet and Systems investigation team, you’ll be provided with a unique insight into the operations of GCHQ, utilising niche skill-sets that you will acquire through our comprehensive package of job-specific training. In this team, there are sometimes requirements for travel and overtime.

While the roles described below are challenging, our flexible working policy ensures a healthy work-life balance. Wherever possible, we look to accommodate reduced hours or job share options balanced against business needs.

Our roles include the following:

Internet Software Developer – creation of tools and techniques to interact with a variety of differing web based sources to elicit unique and valuable information.

Internet Platforms Developer – defining and constructing online products and services to market to a specific customer base.

Vulnerability Discovery/Exploit Practitioner – identification of software vulnerabilities from open source and production of exploits to understand the weakness within the online space.

We’re looking to recruit innovative and committed individuals from all backgrounds, working with a broad team, as well as a wide customer base. With the drive and patience to work toward dynamic real world outcomes, you have an interest in Internet technologies and the ability to apply non-traditional solutions to problems. You have experience with web-based technologies / services and / or low-level understanding of host based systems, and have a thirst for learning new knowledge.

For all roles described above, you'll have either industry experience, or have (or will obtain shortly) a 2:1 in a relevant subject. For the other roles described above, a relevant degree in a STEM subject is required: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Cyber Security.

Depending on the role you will take on, some further skills are desirable; programming (Java, Javascript, C, Python), networking, HTML, software reverse engineering, ethical hacking and big data, to name a few.

At GCHQ we’re proud of our inclusive and supportive working environment that’s designed to encourage open minds and attitudes. As an organisation that values and nurtures talent, we’re committed to helping you fulfil your potential. But you’re not expected to come to us with a wealth of knowledge, or skills, on day one. With comprehensive training and development opportunities, tailored to your personal needs and the requirements of your work, we’ll enable you to flourish in your role and perform to the very best of your abilities.
