The reason I applied for the apprenticeship at was because it gave me the chance to take a foundation degree… and most of the other courses I looked at didn’t offer this. Alongside this, it also offered workplace learning and other training. I was also attracted by the chance to work at such an important IT business.
I think the best aspect of it is the chance to put the skills you learn into practice… You don’t really get that on a full degree course. And you’re not only getting brilliant training through the degree, but you’re also working with experts in the business. The people I’ve worked with on my placements are very knowledgeable and a great source of information… so you learn even more and to a very high standard.
The amount of support has been great. I receive constant feedback on where I stand in terms of the degree and the diploma, as well as on how well I do on my placements. And if I need any help at all, there’s always someone to speak to.
Probably the biggest challenge for me so far has been learning how to program. I’d never done any sort of programming before – although it was always something I wanted to get into. But the apprenticeship gave me the chance to learn… and now I’d say it’s one of my strongest skills.
I’ve always wanted to work in IT. The apprenticeship’s a great way to get a foot in the door and it’s providing me with vital skills. It’s given me the workplace skills you need for any job… plus the skills I need to progress in my career. Having the chance to do this at a fairly young age is brilliant.
The thing that I find really enjoyable is being able to contribute to real work for the business. It makes you feel like you’re valued and contributing to the bigger picture. I get a great feeling of satisfaction… That’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.
